Federal election 2021: No more delays — the climate crisis needs action now

OTTAWA – The election results send a clear message: Canadians demand strong, decisive action tackling social inequality and the climate crisis without delay.

Greenpeace Canada is calling on the Liberals, NDP, Greens and Bloc Québécois to cooperate in order to deliver on the demands for bold climate action supported by a large majority of Canadians. Just in the past few months, we saw record-breaking heat waves across the east and west of the country, and a devastating fire season that burnt through forests and communities. We’re out of time to waste.

Keith Stewart, senior energy strategist with Greenpeace, said:

“Today, a large majority of Canadians voted in favour of parties promising action on climate change. Now the hard work begins to ensure our new government delivers ambitious action at a pace and scale comparable to the climate, biodiversity and inequality crises threatening our communities.”

The Liberals, NDP,  Greens, and BQ must cooperate to deliver on their commitments and increase their ambition — since each of their platforms is insufficient to address the climate crisis. We call on the parties to work together to:

  • Stop all new fossil fuel expansion and put forward a plan to phase out fossil fuels.
  • Implement the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action and UNDRIP.
  • Implement a just transition for workers including income support and funding for green jobs.
  • End fossil fuel subsidies and cancel the Trans Mountain Pipeline immediately.
  • Increase targets and develop a plan to hit 60% domestic emissions reductions by 2030 (versus 2005).
  • Implement fair taxation of the wealthy to help pay for the transition.

See our detailed comparison of the parties’ climate plans.
